Champion for Sexually Abused Swimmers
Patrick Bailey has been a champion against sexual abuse for many years. He has helped victims to recover compensation for sexual abuse and the resulting emotional scars, which never properly heal. A single act of sexual abuse is too much. It seems inconceivable that an institutionalized pattern of sexual abuse has been prevalent in the elite swim community for decades. Its victims have largely been girls and teens, many destined to represent their country at the Olympics and other international competitions.
A recent 20/20 report uncovered the ugly truth about the competitive swimming culture. In short, sexual abuse by coaches was more pervasive than anyone thought. Mr. Bailey was stunned by the scope of the revelations. He discovered that inappropriate behavior by swim coaches is more prevalent in women’s swimming than even an experienced sexual abuse lawyer could imagine. Others victims from the swim community came forward and explained that even if a swimmer had not experienced sexual abuse personally, they definitely knew someone who had.
Swim coaches are in a position of power over these young elite swimmers who usually spend more time with her coach than her own family. Although swimming’s national governing body, USA Swimming, has finally taken a stand against any sexual relationships between swimmer and coach, they are not doing enough to protect the children under their responsibility.
Mr. Bailey seeks compensation for the victims of these sexual crimes. He also intends to uncover the truth behind swimming coach sexual abuse so that our young, promising female swimmers are protected in the future. Unfortunately for us all, it usually takes legal action resulting from an epidemic of this size to be addressed properly. Mr. Bailey is available to speak to any person who feels they have been sexually abused or has been put in a compromising position by swim coaches or others in authority over our youth.
