Emergency Medical Services

There are several pieces of aviation equipment that Emergency Medical Services will use in order to rescue a person or group caught in extreme conditions or deliver them to a hospital as quickly as possible.

EMS Aircraft:  This is any type of aircraft that is used to rescue a person from a threatening and dangerous situation and/or deliver them to a hospital.

Air Ambulance:  This is an aircraft that is equipped with life saving equipment and staff for the use and transport of patients who are ill or seriously injured.

Rescue Aircraft:  This is an aircraft that would be used to retrieve lost or injured persons from isolated areas.  These emergency evacuation aircraft are required to have at a minimum, one medically trained person on board.

Emergency Evacuation Aircraft

Emergency aircraft range from helicopters that may rescue a climber off of the top of a mountain to an Air Ambulance that is outfitted with life support equipment to care for sick or injured patients on the way to a hospital.  If a climber sustains a head injury due to a fall, time will be of the essence and quick transport becomes necessary.  These aircraft can fly in extreme whether and other dangerous conditions which may increase their likelihood of having an accident.
